Ingredients

For the Bread
  • 2 cups All-purpose flour Substitute with bread flour for a chewier texture
  • 1 cup Shredded mozzarella cheese Swap with provolone or fontina for a distinct flavor
  • 0.5 cups Grated Parmesan cheese Pecorino Romano can be used for a saltier flavor
  • 2 teaspoons Active dry yeast Ensure it is fresh by checking the expiration date
  • 1 cup Warm water Water should be around 110°F (43°C) for optimal activation
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil Can be replaced with melted butter for different flavors
  • 2 teaspoons Dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil, thyme) Fresh herbs can be substituted but adjust the quantity to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder Use fresh minced garlic for a stronger presence
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Essential for flavor and controlling yeast activity
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar Omit for a less sweet bread if desired

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Loaf pan
  • Wire rack

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in 1 cup of warm water (around 110°F or 43°C). Sprinkle the active dry yeast on top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a mixing bowl, add the olive oil, salt, garlic powder, and dried Italian herbs to the yeast mixture. Stir in 2 cups of all-purpose flour, mixing until combined. Gradually add more flour until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, and knead for about 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, covering it with a cloth. Set it in a warm spot and allow it to rise for about 30 minutes.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently and fold in the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheeses.
  6. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan. Let it rise for another 15-20 minutes.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the loaf for about 30 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
