For the Marinade
  • 1/4 cup Hoisin Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce low-sodium for healthier option
  • 2 tablespoons Honey maple syrup can be a substitute
  • 2 tablespoons Oyster Sauce or use soy sauce for vegetarian option
  • 2 tablespoons Rice Vinegar white wine vinegar is a suitable alternative
  • 4 cloves Garlic (minced) fresh preferred
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese Five-Spice Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame Oil or replace with another oil
For the Chicken
  • 2 pounds Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thighs or adjust cooking time for chicken breasts

Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and sesame oil. Stir until well blended and set aside.
  3. Place chicken thighs in a resealable plastic bag. Pour half of the marinade over the chicken, seal the bag, and massage to coat. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  4. Transfer the remaining marinade into a separate container and refrigerate.
  5. After marinating, let the chicken sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Arrange marinated chicken on the baking sheet, spacing apart. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  7. Simmer the reserved marinade in a saucepan over medium heat for about 10 minutes until thickened.
  8. Brush thickened marinade over chicken and broil for an additional 2-3 minutes to caramelize.
  9. Let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
