  • ½ cup Ground Coffee choose a good quality roast
For the Spices
  • 1 stick Cinnamon Stick can substitute with ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 Star Anise contributes a subtle licorice flavor
  • 4 cloves Cloves
For Sweetening
  • 2 oz Piloncillo offers a rich, molasses-like sweetness
  • ½ cup Brown Sugar a great alternative if piloncillo isn’t available

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions for Cafe de Olla
  1. In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, add a cinnamon stick, 2 star anise, 4 cloves, and your choice of sweetener. Stir until the sweetener is completely dissolved.
  2. Remove the pot from heat and stir in ½ cup of ground coffee. Mix well to combine, then let the blend steep for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. After steeping, place a fine mesh strainer over a large bowl and pour the coffee mixture through to separate the liquid from the grounds and spices.
  4. Pour the strained Cafe de Olla into your favorite mugs while it's still hot, and savor the rich aroma and warmth of your homemade drink.
